Dry Stone Walling

There are emany types and styles of dry stone wallingdepending on the stone being used, and the size of the wall, but the principal is the same. You have to build a wall with just stone and no mortar.

Like a lot of the walling, stone in the cotswolds is small and flat so you get a much tighter looking wall, you can get away with a thinner wall with this type of stone. Whereas in places like North Wales (where I learned 40 years ago) a lot of the stone is round and not very even and so you havegot to have a much fatter wall, which in turn with being less even stone gives you larger gaps between stones. This is great for wildlife.

The type also used in Wales but mainly Cornwall is called a "Cornish Hedge", which is a very wide wall with stone both sides and earth in the middle.

These are just a few of the styles used across the country.
